This poster is based on the Studio Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke.
I saw an announcement that it was being brought back into theaters, and I got excited and created this to honor the movie.
I added multiple textures and a displacement map to give the poster a scanned/paper feel.
Design Rationale
What is this movie about?
This movie speaks on the relationship between nature and humanity. It occurs mainly in the forest, so I chose a dark, foresty green. I included some iconic scenes, creatures, and people from the movie.
In the first image, San is atop her mother (the wolf), Moro. This image is most associated with the movie. I wanted it to pop off the poster, so I positioned them outside the boundary box.
The second and third images are a combination following Ashitaki, the prince. In both instances, he's in a fighting position and has strong emotions. I put it to San and Moro's right to show they are at odds.
The third image is from the footer. I chose the first icon because it looked like the world was folding in on itself. I took it as humanity conquering every part. The second icon is a spirit from the show. I wanted to include him since he is an iconic character. Underneath him is a globe, nature. He is walking on top of it. The remaining icons spoke to me about unity and connection—nature and humanity trying to connect.
The last image is from the top text. I included information about the movie, the name in Japanese, and Kodamas (forest spirits, iconic to the film).
