Concept
The concept for this project was to design a visually engaging travel magazine spread that captures the atmosphere and cultural richness of an annual event called the Asian Lantern Festival. The goal was to translate the sensory experience of the event, glowing lanterns, vibrant colors, and nighttime ambiance, into a compelling editorial layout.
The project scope included designing a multi-page magazine feature, incorporating typography, image selection, layout composition, and color direction. The design needed to balance immersive visuals with clear, readable content, reflecting the style and standards of a contemporary travel publication.
This project focused on creating a cohesive visual narrative that informs readers while evoking the emotional experience of attending the festival.
Solution
The final design translates the atmosphere of the Asian Lantern Festival into a visually immersive editorial layout that balances storytelling with strong visual impact.
Drawing from the festival’s themes of light, culture, and celebration, I did not shy away from using the darker photographs with vibrant, glowing color accents to mimic the contrast of illuminated lanterns against the night sky.
To improve readability and narrative flow, I structured the layout with a clear hierarchy, using bold headers, consistent spacing, and modular sections to guide the viewer through the article. Large, high-impact imagery was prioritized to capture the scale and emotional experience of the festival, while supporting text was kept concise and well-paced.
Typography was selected to reflect a modern travel magazine aesthetic while remaining legible and elegant. I also ensured consistency in color grading and image treatment to create a cohesive visual system across the spread.
Overall, the solution delivers a design that not only informs but also recreates the feeling of walking through a glowing lantern festival—engaging the viewer and enhancing the storytelling experience.
